Top 3 Tips: Studying for Midterms

Written by Mike H, contributing writer

October. One of my favorite months filled with playoff baseball, outrageous Halloween parties, and of course great NFL and college football games! But October is also an incredibly bittersweet month because of one word: Midterms. I find myself sitting in the library on this Sunday night overloaded with work and trying to figure out how I am going to get by the next two weeks. My calendar reads two tests, two papers, one quiz, and three problem sets or in plain English “no sleep for you!”

However, as a 4th year at Virginia I’ve encountered this kind of killer stretch before and every time I seem to come out unscathed and surprisingly well rested. Although midterms aren’t easy they are manageable and as such here are some great tips from around the web that should help you score an A on your hardest test or at least make sure you wake up in time for your exam unlike my friend to the right!

1. Procrastination is your enemy not your friend: Everybody knows that procrastination is bad but yet everybody seems to do it. Let’s be honest, the best time to write a paper is the night before its due, right? Wrong! While you may think you’re performing better, all-nighters impede memory retention and help convince you that attending class is meaningless. So how can you avoid it? Luke Turcotte at Hack College wrote out 5 quick tips for avoiding procrastination and #5 on his list is “Just do it”. Hmm, I thought I was procrastinating because I didn’t want to do it? But seriously it’s a great list and will help you finish your assignments promptly and on time. (via http://www.hackcollege.com)

2. Distribute your studying time wisely and efficiently: Every teacher I have had since elementary school has preached to the class the importance of time management. Managing your time wisely is difficult at times because your schedule is in a constant state of flux and teachers are constantly assigning new material. But that’s OK, college students are incredibly adaptive and as Stefan Knapen notes must students “only study when it is needed”. According to Stefan, college students fall under 3 time distributions and knowing which category you are in will help you understand your study habits. Chances are you already practice good time management, you just don’t know it yet. (via  http://studysuccessful.com)

3. Find the best study spot besides the overcrowded library: First year students tend to forget that there are other spots to study besides the main library and it’s often a crucial mistake. Go off the beaten path just a bit and you’ll find study nooks that you didn’t think possible. Good places to start are law, business, and fine art libraries or search for empty classrooms that you can use for group study sessions. Don’t know what to look for in a good study area? Dan N provides a recipe for the perfect study session with the three main ingredients being lighting, comfort, and distraction. Maximizing comfort while minimizing distractions will increase memory retention and help you study quickly and more efficiently. (via http://collegethrive.com)

Chances are if you read this far you’re probably procrastinating from finishing an important paper or studying for a test. But that’s OK, relax! Although I have a tough two weeks ahead of me, all I can think about right now is that the San Francisco Giants are NL West Champions! Probably not the best way to study but hey, I’ve done this before and I’ll do it again just like you will. Good luck on your midterms and happy studying!

Tikiman Chats with 1st Time BookRenter Customer

This week Tikiman had the opportunity to interview Harry Bowron, a student at the University of Virginia who rented his textbooks from BookRenter the first time this semester. A third year engineering student, Harry was happy to sit down and discuss his experience renting his textbooks online from BookRenter.

Tikiman: Harry thanks for sitting down and talking with me. I’m interested to know why you decided to rent textbooks for this semester. Have you ever rented before?

Harry: I actually rented through the UVA bookstore once before and found the process not only incredibly convenient, but also very cost effective. I figured that since I had such a good experience renting textbooks before, I didn’t have a reason to hesitate to rent from BookRenter.

Tikiman: Is renting textbooks a popular choice at your school?

Harry: I certainly think that the idea of renting is growing as the word of mouth spreads. I even saw someone with a BookRenter sticker on their notebook the other day in class! It was cool to know that there are other people at UVA renting textbooks and saving money just like I did.

Tikiman: Good Point.  How was your experience renting your textbooks via the BookRenter website?

Harry: I was actually really surprised at how intuitive the website interface was and how quickly I was able to find the textbooks I needed.

Tikiman: So how much exactly did you end up saving? Was it about as much as you expected it would be?

Harry: Before hearing about BookRenter from a friend, I had visited the UVA bookstore’s website and noted that my textbooks would have cost around $600. However renting from BookRenter enabled me to save over $400, much-much more, than the $100 I expected to save, by renting.

Tikiman: That’s great! So, you were able to save 4X as much as you were expecting. Since you had such a great experience, how likely are you to tell others about how easy it is to save money by renting?

Harry: I know a good amount of friends and fellow students who everyday worry about paying their way through college. Renting textbooks is such an easy way to save money that I feel like everybody who wants to actively be saving money should rent as well.

Tikiman: It sounds like you would be a perfect member of TikiTribe, our referral program that helps you earn cash for every friend you refer to BookRenter. Sound interesting?

Harry: Wow that would definitely be something I would be interested in joining. Where can I join or find out more details?

Tikiman: Head over to tikitribe.bookrenter.com to sign-up and get started building your tribe.

Harry: I’ll be sure to check that out, Thanks for letting me know!

Tikiman: No problem, thanks for chatting with me. Good luck this semester!

University of San Diego Acala Bazaar

Guest written by BookRenter Andy

Last week, I flew to the University of San Diego’s campus on behalf of BookRenter. My assignment was easy enough: head down to the USD “Acala Bazaar”, hand out some bookmarks and bottle-opener key chains, talk to the students about textbook rental, and eat some tacos. The tacos part wasn’t quite in my assignment, but how do you go to San Diego and not eat tacos? Anyway, I left the house without applying sunscreen to my pale, sensitive skin, because I’d read the weather report and saw it would be cloudy until noon. Fail. It turns out -I can get sunburned even while sitting in the shade under a tent.

But back to the Bazaar. Although, I was representing BookRenter, I was really working on behalf of the USD bookstore. USD’s bookstore, like 250 other colleges in the United States, use BookRenter’s platform to power its online rental store. I was there to promote the University’s rental service. BookRenter has partnered with these schools in order to make rental more convenient for the students and schools alike.

Students like getting the bookstores because it’s easy (right guys?), and BR is making the process even easier. On the whole, the students were pretty jazzed about the option to rent, and my job did itself.

Student: “You can save money?”
Me: “Yes”, I said.
Student: “How much money?”
Me: “A- lot – like 75% off the full-retail price!”
Student: “Wow!”

Still, I had some stiff competition at the Bazaar. To my right, Will from Mochi was handing out free iPod touch cases. Will had a killer line, he would yell out every few minutes, which would reel in 5 or 10 freshmen searching for free stuff, “I have free iPod touch cases if you want them”. Heads turned, feet shuffled, and free iPod touch cases were handed out. Will was out of supplies in an hour. My bottle opener key-chains were also a big hit. By 2:30 pm I was wrapping up the table, having satisfied the key-chain needs of hundreds of students.

Helping Locals in Need

Written by Rebecca W, staff contributing writer

Every morning I wake up listening to the local news- and honestly I barely pay attention to anything other than the traffic report.  Today was different. As some of you may know last night a gas main exploded in San Bruno, Ca.

Four deaths, dozens were injured by this explosion and resulting fire. 38 houses have been destroyed; far more are damaged, along with acres of land and these numbers are only going to go up.  As the words were spoken on the radio all I could think was “How can I help?”  The radio announcer explained that they were looking for gently used children’s clothing along with other items.  We had just cleaned out our children’s closets washed and folded the cloths for donation; a huge bag of clothing was just sitting in our garage.   My husband and I packed up the car with boxes of new children’s books, big bag of gently used cloths and drove up to San Bruno.

The explosion was only a city over from our office here at BookRenter.  Sitting in my cozy chair staring at my screen my mind kept wandering to the families that are now homeless and in need.  So we decided as a company we needed to help.  BookRenter will be donating $1,000 to the City of San Bruno Glenview Fire Victims Fund, along with $100 worth of diapers and formula.

If you too would like to donate;

Donations can be sent to the City of San Bruno Glenview Fire Victims Fund;

City of San Bruno

attn: City Manager
567 El Camino Real
San Bruno, CA 94066

People wishing to donate items in person are asked to take them to the First Tongan United Methodist Church, located at 560 El Camino Real in San Bruno.

Blood Centers of the Pacific has launched an emergency appeal for Type-O negative blood. People who want to donate are asked to call 888-393-GIVE or visit http://bloodcenters.org.

The Bay Area Red Cross is also asking for blood donations as well as donations of money.  For more information visits http://www.bayarea-redcross.org.
